Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival
COACHELLA WEEKEND ONE OR TWO
For any first-time festival goer, the main question is always, "which weekend is better?" We polled many locals and visitors alike to get the answers for you!
Not many festivals can maintain a two-weekend event, but with the vast worldwide and undeniably influential range of attendees, Coachella's consecutive two-weekend split has been going strong since 2012.
There are many factors that go into creating The Coachella experience from the live music to art installations and sculptures, to the fashion, and of course the adorned food trucks!
Goldenvoice's overall plan is to produce two identical shows, or at least close to it. The main lineup is the same both weekends - there are differences with the special guests per weekend with weekend one trumping weekend two annually, but even with that - the sets shift no more than 15 - 30 minutes! The ticket price is the same for either weekend, however, you could save more on nightly rent around the Coachella Valley on weekend two. The art and exhibitions remain the same over both weekends.
So what's the difference? The answer is simple, it's the crowd! To some extent people who attend Coachella weekend, one or two love music, but over the years the festival has become more of a show than merely a music experience.
See the big differences below.
Weekend one offers the shockers, the new sets, the new art exhibits – it’s seeing it for the first time, while weekend two is a mere replay of the original weekend. It has attracted celebrities and influencers by the masses who share their experience via social media. The entire vibe is more fast-paced and everyone is trying to meet the celebrities, or blindly hit the best stage for performances. There is much more coverage to try and get the best stories or shockers first. It also holds the title for the best after-parties with celebrity attendees.
Weekend two is the weekend that more locals attend. It’s for those who are just committed to seeing their favorite artists and don't mind missing out on all the "shocker" moments. The vibe feels different as festival-goers are calmer and less worried about their social media presence – only clashing set times. People know what to expect, know which artists are not to be missed, and know the best spots to get their pictures. The bands all have had a “dress rehearsal” and play an amazing set for the second weekend.
The answer is really dependent on your personality.
If you want the whole experience, the shock value, to see more celebrities - all while enjoying your favorite bands then attend the first weekend.
If you're looking for a chill vibe to see some of your favorite artists and just enjoy music without all the hoopla of what the first weekend brings, you will enjoy the second weekend.
Either way, if you plan to attend the festival stay in the know with up-to-date regulations.
After a night at the festival, you will need a place to come home to and relax. Spend your days cooling off in a private, or community pool with other festival-goers.
You will want to stay in Indio, La Quinta, Bermuda Dunes, or Palm Desert. With the limits on short-term rental permits, it will be increasingly difficult to find last-minute lodging in close proximity to the festival. Book early for your Coachella stay and ensure you're booking through a reputable site.
